The main body of the collection relates to the business activities, beginning in 1780, of the Lewis family. The early correspondence and financial papers of Mordecai Lewis and his sons Mordecai and Samuel N. Lewis, Philadelphia merchants, pertain to trade with the West Indies, Europe, and Asia, and contains some ship records. Samuel N. Lewis ledger, 1800-1840, and Mordecai and Samuel N. Lewis journal, 1817-1849, cover the period of their bankruptcy in 1817 and eventual recovery by 1842 as lead manufacturers. The later incoming correspondence and financial records relate to the Lewis' industrial enterprises including the Philadelphia Lead Works.
